Happy Valentine’s Day!

I’m not a big chocolate or jewelry kind of gal, but this gift that my husband gave me totally melted my heart!

A meaningful painting…

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

Rainy Days

There’s just something magical when it rains since it seldom does out here in Southern California.  I don’t know if it’s the fresh smells or the feeling of everything being washed away, but I’m one of those people that love it when it rains.

I think most people would groan at the thought of waiting 3.5 hours for their tires to be replaced especially on a pouring day like today, but I had fun walking through puddles, going from store to store to pass the time.

It reminded me of the days when I was younger; my sisters and I would run out in our bathing suits and pretend we were at a water park. My grandma would yell at us to get inside horrified at the vision of us girls rolling around in the puddles. We didn’t have a care in the world. We would dare each other to pick up the earthworms that would surface on the ground and shriek every time we thought we would step on one. We would play make believe and make up crazy stories about how we would get zapped into another dimension or galaxy if we didn’t step in a puddle as we hopped across our driveway.

It’s the feeling of nostalgia and the memories that come flooding back that make me love days like today.  As I sip on my cup of hot tea and stare out my window reminiscing about the past, I hope all you Southern Californians sit back and enjoy this beautiful rainy day.

Inspired From Down Under

It’s just one of those days…

Today, I’m sick at home, so instead of lying in bed sleeping or watching TV all day and wishing this cold would go away, I thought why not blog.  So here I am with my cup of hot tea, tissues and in my pajamas sitting in front of my laptop. The temptation to sit in front of the TV and veg all day is great because it’s only been a month since we’ve had cable or any kind of television.

When my husband and I first got married 4.5 years ago we decided to not have television because we thought it would give us a lot of time for us to talk and bond. We would get our occasional TV fix by watching Hulu.  However, after all of these years we caved and both of us absolutely love it.

My new favorite show right now is Top Chef All Stars.  My husband and I love watching the competition and our commentary is so funny because we have such strong opinions on who we think is good without even tasting the food!

But I digress…

I originally meant to post about one of my latest projects that I had been working on, but got carried away.  With Christmas coming up, I had been working on an ornament series and this is another one of my designs.

This is a tribute to all of my friends and family living Down Under! As my old roomie Ali would say, “G-day mate!”

The Nutcracker Ornament

This is absolutely one of my favorite ornaments that I’ve made this year.

Who doesn’t love a little nutcracker!

This little character brings back so many memories.  My elementary school put on a production of the Nutcracker so this beautiful ballet has a special place in my heart. I was one of the little plum fairies prancing around my school stage. Even though I wasn’t able to live out my childhood dream of becoming a dancer, I think making beautiful clay pieces isn’t too shabby.

Looking forward to Christmas in only two weeks!

A Hello Kitty Birthday

Hello Kitty was an icon for me growing up and probably for most girls when I was young.   Whether it was a water bottle, doll, or stationary, you could bet that I had at least one or all of these things during my elementary school years.  I remember my parents would bring home a bunch of Sanrio presents and being the “good” older sister that I was, I would always snatch up the cute Hello Kitty goodies for myself and leave the less popular Sanrio items for my younger sisters.   Sorry Jene and Shin!

The reason I bring this up is because we celebrated my sister-in-law Sarah’s birthday yesterday and she requested a cute Nerd Hello Kitty USB for a gift. It’s the perfect gift for an elementary school teacher because it’s just the right amount of cuteness with a bit of sophistication!

Since, I was going to get her a Hello Kitty themed gift, I thought why not go all out and make her a Hello Kitty Cake!  I was originally going to use a cake mix and just focus on the design, but I thought why not make a cake that not only looks good, but tastes good as well.

Thus began my hunt for the perfect cake recipe.

My sister in law usually prefers cakes from the Chinese bakery so luckily for me I was able to find a pretty good one on the pocket daydreams food blog.  The recipe is really thorough and Bonnie, the blogger gives you step by step instructions with pictures which was great for a novice baker like myself.

And here’s the final product!

It was fairly easy to make and I had a lot of fun trying to make the cake resemble Hello Kitty.  And the best part was the fact that my sister in law loved it =)

Unfortunately,

Hello Kitty was not a bit pleased with the dreaded fate she would have to face.  She argued and pleaded…

But in the end, her fate was sealed … Sorry Hello Kitty!

This is all to say Happy Birthday Sarah!!
